Staff Sgt. Ed Schmitt, a survey team chief with the Wisconsin National Guard's 54th Civil Support Team, extracts a mock suspicious chemical compound as part of an unannounced training exercise May 20 in Madison, Wis. The 54th CST was alerted at 4 a.m. of a letter containing an unknown white powder discovered in a building near the Dane County Regional Airport. The return address led the team to a clandestine chemical laboratory in an abandoned building.
