When responding to the worst, Wisconsin Guardsman the best

Staff Sgt. Ed Schmitt, a survey team chief with the Wisconsin National Guard's 54th Civil Support Team, extracts a mock suspicious chemical compound as part of an unannounced training exercise May 20 in Madison, Wis. The 54th CST was alerted at 4 a.m. of a letter containing an unknown white powder discovered in a building near the Dane County Regional Airport. The return address led the team to a clandestine chemical laboratory in an abandoned building. The 54th CST assists local authorities in detecting and identifying chemical, biological and radiological hazards. (Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs photo by Vaughn R. Larson)
