Chief Warrant Officer 4 Robert Cook, Signals Intelligence Analysis Technician with International Security Assistance Force Joint Command (IJC) and XVIII Airborne Corps plays the bag pipe to honor the fallen during a memorial ceremony held at Headquarters ISAF, Afghanistan March 29, 2014. Cook volunteers with the Cross Creek Pipe and Drums band, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving highland arts and education in the Fayetteville, NC region. He says he never expected to play for any events and only brought his pipes to practice and use as a stress reliever during his deployment. During one of Cook’s practice sessions, U.S. Navy Lt. Cdr. Thomas Frizzell, NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan (NTM-A) Chaplain heard the resonant sound of the pipes and asked him to play for the ISAF memorial ceremony. Although apprehensive at first, Cook agreed to play the pipes at the memorial ceremony. The bagpipe adds a solemn and dignified touch to the funeral ceremony and can communicate a sense of closure.
