Rct. Shawn Saunders, with Platoon 2028, Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, runs to the next obstacle of a combat training course March 18, 2014, as part of Basic Warrior Training on Parris Island, S.C., Instructors use smoke grenades to disorient the recruits and simulate the “fog of war.” Basic Warrior Training introduces recruits to basic field skills all Marines must know. Saunders, a 19-year-old native of Marshalls Creek, Pa., is scheduled to graduate April 11, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
