Rct. Jesse Powers, an 18-year-old Manchester, N.H., native, is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title of United States Marine. Powers is training with Platoon 1022, Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate April 4, 2014. “I decided to join the Marine Corps because … when I got out of high school, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, and I saw a lot of my friends coming home from [boot camp] and the pride they had and how motivated they were. I thought to myself, ‘that’s what I want to become,’” said Powers, who graduated from Manchester Central High School in 2013. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis)
