Lance Cpl. Rafael Soto collects a bag of distinctive black sand from a beach on Iwo To Jan. 31 during a professional military education trip to the island. Visitors to the island, formerly known as Iwo Jima, are allowed to take only sand as a memento and must leave all other ammunition, weapons and battle flotsam in place.
