Recruits of Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, and Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, swim 25 meters using packs as flotation devices Feb. 24, 2014, during water survival qualification on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits also leapt from a 10-foot tower, swam 25 meters in full utility uniforms and wearing boots and shed their gear in 10 seconds or less while underwater. Each exercise simulates a water survival technique recruits may need if they become Marines. Both companies are scheduled to graduate April 25, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
