Soldiers of the 441st Transportation Co, of New Orleans, La, hook up a vehicle for slingload operations as part of their mission at SeaPort Operations Co training in December at Fort Eustis, VA. The helicopter is crewed by members of the 1st Battalion, 228th Aviation Regiment, Ft. Eustis. Hovering over the target , Safety and controlled speed are key factors in a successful and safe hookup and carry to its final destination.

  • In December 2013, the 1189th Transportation Brigade, Deployment Support Command, conducted  SeaPort Operations Company 14-1 (SPOC) exercise at Joint Base Langley Eustis.  Soldiers of the 441st Transportation Company, New Orleans, Louisiana grounded guided a vehicle to store and ship on the “land ship” built for the purpose of training and refreshing skills of cargo specialists and transportation coordinators.

Pvt 1st Cls Steven Sherwood, of Wavelland, MS, is a Transportation Coordinator with 441st Transportation Company.  He is ground guiding the driver of the vehicle, Spec Thaddeus Walker of New Orleans, also a member of the 441st, as he maneuvers the vehicle into place on the land ship.  Soldiers trained on the “land ship” built for the purpose of training and refreshing skills of cargo specialists and transportation coordinators

As part of the joint nature of the exercise, members of the Naval Cargo Handling Battalion  8, of Fort Dix, NJ participated in SPOC.  As part of slingload operations, in background, Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Nelson Sweeting, Bronx, NY,  and in foreground, Boatswains Mate 1st Class Meriela Anderson, of NJ, secure the chains to the hooks of a HMMWV to prepare for it to be lifted.

US Army SGT Michael Gray of  861st Quartermaster Co (Aerial Equipment Repair and Supply) of Nashville, TN, teaches a class in proper slingload procedure.  He has Naval Information Technologist 1st Class Jay Herlihy present a Reach Pendant, a weight bearing connecting  apparatus for different size loads.
