Iwo To, once known as Iwo Jima, sits 750 miles off the coast of mainland Japan. On the far right is Invasion Beach, where Marines from 3rd, 4th and 5th Marine Divisions, including Lionel Louis Ramos, a corpsman from World War II, first set foot on the island of Iwo Jima. The Iwo Jima Campaign is known as the bloodiest battle in Marine Corps history and was the turning point of the war in the Pacific during World War II, according to the Marine Corps history division.
