Army Maj. Gen. Greg Lusk, adjutant general of North Carolina, presents a N.C. state flag flown over the N.C. National Guard's Joint Force Headquarters in Raleigh, N.C., as a tribute to World War II veteran Jerry Miller Smith, at the North Carolina Executive Mansion, also in Raleigh, Aug. 27, 2013. Smith is one of the pioneers of the famed "Seabees" that became part of the militarized Naval Construction Force that built vast and advance bases, hospitals, highways, and airports in combat zones throughout the South Pacific Islands in the 1940s. Smith's birthday was presided by N.C. Lt. Gov. Dan Forest, Lusk and other dignitaries from the armed forces and N.C. government. (U.S. Army National Guard Photo by Sgt.
