Video by Airman 1st Class Aaron Brown

    Air Force Safety Center

I should’ve died that night. My story begins with partying too hard, and ends with twenty-five broken bones, a summer confined to a wheelchair and months of rehab.

My friends and I went to a lake house to jet ski and unwind. We started drinking about noon, and I had way too much.

    Strike one.

At about 2 AM, I went off on my own and decided it would be a brilliant idea to climb a tree.

    Strike two.

I climbed nearly forty feet up.

    Strike three.

I don’t remember falling, but I do recall suddenly looking up at the sky struggling to breath. I blacked out at least four times from pain as an ambulance rushed me to the hospital. Twenty of my twenty-five broken bones were in my back. I also broke my femur, both wrists, a rib, a pinky and a tooth. The pain sucked, but the worry I caused my mom and dad was almost worse. Drinking too much alcohol negatively affects your decision making; it’s stupid, and I’m lucky to be alive.
