I’m SrA Jamal Moss and I’m here to tell you about the incident that changed my life. I was driving back to base after a 12 hour duty day with 3 passengers. It had snowed that morning so the roads were a little icy. I didn’t think too much of it because we were going back the way we came and had no complications earlier. But nothing could have prepared me for what happened.

We were 30 minutes from base, when we hit a patch of black ice and began to “fishtail.” I tried to remain calm and corrected by rotating my wheel in the direction of the skid, but that only made things worse.

At this point I knew we were going to crash. “Brace yourselves!” I yelled as we slid toward a ditch. The vehicle rolled and landed on its hood.

Thankfully we had followed safety guidelines: we wore working seat belts, stayed vigilant, and reduced speed. We all walked away from the crash that night with only minor injuries. Seat belts saved lives.

I learned that all safety steps are important and are there to keep everyone out of harm’s way. Skipping any simple step, such as not wearing a seat belt, could’ve cost you your life.
