U.S. Coast Guard District 11 PADET Los Angeles

SAN PEDRO, Calif. – The Coast Guard and Baywatch teamed up to rescue a 53-year-old man after his 25-foot sailboat ran aground on the back side of Catalina Island, Calif., Monday morning.

The Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach Command Center received a report of a sailboat aground on the northwest tip of Catalina Island from passing vessel around 8 a.m.

The Coast Guard launched a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles and Baywatch Isthmus dispatched a boat. The boat and helicopter coordinated to hoist the man from the boat and safely transferred him to a landing pad in Isthmus, Calif.

The man is currently being evaluated by medical personnel on Catalina Island, though no injuries have been reported. A salvage plan is being devised to remove the sailboat from the rocks.
