The Songtan Veterans of Foreign Wars, or V-F-W, located just outside Osan Air Base, Korea, dedicated a wall to honor women in the military. Rear Admiral Lisa Franchetti, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Korea, was key speaker at the event and answered questions.
Q: Why is this an important and necessary event?

A: Well, Specialist Loy, you know that March is Women’s History Month and I think today’s event provided us a great opportunity. The theme this year is honoring women of character, courage and commitment. And I think that’s just what we did here today. We looked back at many years of the contributions that women have made in military service and we took the opportunity to honor them today for what they’ve done for our military and for all of us that continue to serve.

Q: Do you see any connection between women and the wall that’s being dedicated?

A: Well you know they way I look at it in terms of “the wall” that we’re talking about today, is really a wall of recognition. Today, if you look around this VFW post they have a wall that recognizes the contributions of the Marine Corps, and the Air Force, and the Army, and the Navy, and they also have one that recognizes the contributions of the women. So I just of a wall as a place of honor in our memories.

Q: Why is it important to recognize women in the military?

A: Well I think in the military it’s important to recognize everybody who serves. And take a pause and look back on our history and see what we used to look like, what we look like today, and what we’re going to look like in the future. Because the military is made up of the sons and daughters of America. We all look different, but we all serve. We want the best and brightest to serve with their best and fullest abilities. And it’s all our job to remember the folks that went before us so we can continue to serve to the best of our capabilities going forward.

Q: How does it make you feel as a woman, to attend this event?

A: Well for me it’s a great honor to have the opportunity to be here today because as I looked out amongst the audience I saw women who have served as long as me, but I also saw women that have served for about four months. And to have the chance to talk about the history of the women that have served and hopefully provide some inspiration for those young women because I know when I was in their seat I was really looking for that and the mentorship and the guidance of the people that I saw above me, so I hope that today I provided a little bit of that here at the ceremony.
