Just hearing the word confined space makes some people cringe, but these maintainers don’t have a choice. If there is an emergency and someone gets trapped in a small area, like a fuel tank, they are going to be the first ones to respond. Maintainers from the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing practiced getting people out of these spaces with the help of the firefighters.
“There’s actually a lot of factors that can cause a confined space emergency, ranging from lack of oxygen to actually being really dehydrated to it being really hot out. All of those little factors that just on a normal day to day basis, if we don’t keep in mind about those we have a stronger possibility of getting trapped inside of a fuel tank.
The familiarization training helps these two career fields work together as a team and learn each other’s job.
“It’s hard to get somebody in to where we work, if they’re not familiar with it, they don’t know, plus they have what ten to twenty pounds of equipment on that they have to get into the tank”
With a little coordination they were able to get the victim to safety and practice the drill in the event of a real world confined space emergency.
