SEATTLE - A memorial service for Coast Guard Medal of Honor recipient Signalman First Class Douglas Munro was held in Cle Elum, Wash. Sept. 27. Munro received the Medal of Honor after facilitating the rescue of hundreds of Marines from a beach at Guadalcanal before he was killed Sept. 27, 1942. Among the many who attended the ceremony were Mayor Charles Glondo of Cle Elum, Cmdr. Ray Evans who served with Munro at Guadalcanal, and Patricia and Doug Sheehan, Munro's sister and nephew respectively. Munro is a Cle Elum native and the only Coast Guard member to be awarded the Medal of Honor. (Official Coast Guard video by PA3 Jeff Pollinger)
