  • PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard medevaced a 42-year-old male crewmember Wednesday from a cruise ship approximately 25 miles east of Cape Lookout, N.C.

Rescued was Dedik Efendi.

The captain of the 950-foot cruise ship Carnival Splendor notified watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector North Carolina command center at approximately 6 p.m. stating Efendi was is in medical distress.

Coast Guard watchstanders launched crews aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., to assist.

The helicopter crew arrived on scene at approximately 8 p.m., hoisted Efendi and took him back to Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.

The man was listed in stable condition.
  • PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard medevaced a 57-year-old woman Wednesday from the Carnival Splendor, a 950-foot cruise ship, approximately 80 miles east of Norfolk.

A crewmember contacted Coast Guard watchstanders at approximately 10:45 a.m., reporting the woman needed medical assistance.

Personnel from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., dispatched crews aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to assist.

The Jayhawk crew arrived on scene at approximately 12:30 p.m., hoisted the woman into the helicopter and took him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
