The 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team’s 2nd Cavalry Regiment from Caldwell, Idaho lit up the night sky at the Orchard Combat Training Center June 10th.
Fire teams fired 120 mm illumination and infrared illumination rounds as part of their annual training, learning and training outside of their comfort zone.
“These guys have gone from firing in a situation they were familiar with – firing from vehicles – to firing from a ground mount situation, which many of them have never trained on” said 1st Lieutenant Jeffrey Dehaven, a fire support officer for the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.
While the mortar teams loaded and fired rounds, fire support specialists at the nearby observation post tracked the shots and gave corrections over the radio.
The regiment continued firing for two days, and then conducted individual weapons qualifications.
