Soldiers from seven different commands across the Army Central Command (ARCENT) start the first day of the 2012 Army Best Warrior Competition held the last week in April at Camp Buehring, Kuwait. This competition is sponsored by the 1st Theater Support Command (TSC), based in Ft. Bragg, NC, and the 364th Expeditionary Sustainment Command (ESC), from Marysville Wash. Over three days, nine competitors from the non-commissioned officer (NCO) and junior enlisted ranks test their soldier skills in this hot, dusty environment. Day one starts with an Army physical fitness test early in the morning. Soldiers are inserted by chopper for the next event, a 16-kilometer tactical march through a training village in the desert of northern Kuwait. Military operations in urban terrain (MOUT) are a crucial training point for today’s soldiers. A variety of improvised explosive devices, citizens, and surprises test the competitors are they lead a squad through scenarios they’re likely to encounter while deployed for contingency operations.
