NATO Spokesperson Oana Lungescu gives a statement about lives lost at sea in late March 2011.
Transcript:
Last year during our operation to enforce the United Nations' arms embargo on Libya, NATO helped rescue over 600 hundreds of migrants in distress in the Mediterranean. Including in late March when this tragic incident happened. We provided a significant amount of information to the Council of Europe to help determine what happened with this boat. What we do know is that no aircraft and no ship under NATO command saw or made contact with the boat. Had we known we would have helped, as we did with on so many other occasions during the Operation, saving hundreds of lives. Because all our commanders are fully aware of their responsibilities under international maritime law.
