"I've never understood how some leaders believe that the way to lead effectively is by talking down to people or being overtly rude and condescending, as if they are better than their followers" said Chief Master Sgt. Matthew Caruso, 27th Special Operations Wing command chief. "In my years as an enlisted airman I've found that the opposite is true. If you want to be an effective leader, you have to be liked and part of being likeable stems largely from having a caring or compassionate and humble tone in your words and actions."

About four years ago, one of my closest friends lost her life in an auto accident. She had gone to a club with a group of people, and they all had a bit too much to drink. When the club closed down for the night, they got into the car and started driving home. At some point the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with another motorist.
