Marines and Afghan National Security Forces put continued pressure on the insurgency during Operation Sangin United Horizons, a battalion sized operation that took place May 17-20. Dog Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, was responsible for finding and destroying weapons caches, improvised explosive devices and drug-producing facilities. An insurgent commander was arrested in Helmand on Monday 21 May,
according to the Helmand Governor’s Media Centre.
The insurgent commander named Mohammad Jan was arrested as a result of
an Afghan National Army (ANA) special operation in the Sangin district
of Helmand on Monday evening.
When captured he was in found to be in possession of 57 kilos of
heroin, 75 kilos of Cannabis, 30 kilos of poppy plants, eight boxes of
rounds, one machine gun, one rifle, sixty machine gun magazines , a
pair of binoculars, one pistol with a hundred rounds, two satellite
mobile phones and ancillaries.
No shots were fire during the operation and the insurgent commander is
now under arrest with local authorities.
