Ouart to receive Purple Heart in Saturday ceremony
A former North Dakota National Guard soldier who deployed to Iraq with the 191st Military Police Company will be awarded a Purple Heart medal. Retired Spc. Russell “Rusty” Ouart, of Fargo, N.D., will receive the medal at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Fargo Armed Forces Reserve Center, 3920 31st St. N., Fargo.

After just a few months in Fargo, the new Military Service Center welcomed its 1,000th customer this week. Provided by the North Dakota National Guard, the center’s unique concept serves military service members, veterans and military families from all service branches and eras of service.

The North Dakota National Guard biathlon team entered this weekend’s regional competition with a bit of pessimism. A few of the team’s top biathletes couldn’t attend, and two others left after the first day’s race to compete overseas. Nevertheless, the success of recent years continued, and the team pulled off a win at the Central Region Biathlon Competition at Mt. Itasca, near Grand Rapids, Minn. This is the third year in a row the North Dakota National Guard has swept the competition.

The North Dakota National Guard, along with the South Dakota National Guard today mark 150 years of service to their communities, state and nation as they celebrate the Jan. 27, 1862, birth date of the organization’s formation.


Soldier to return after serving 29 months in KosovoSoldier to return after serving 29 months in Kosovo
After deploying with Kosovo Force 12 in August 2009, the North Dakota National Guard's Sgt. Josh Dodds is returning to North Dakota after a 29-month deployment. Dodds, of Grand Forks, N.D., has spent the past two years serving as part of the NATO peacekeeping operations after volunteering to extend his original Kosovo deployment. The North Dakota contingency that led KFOR 12 arrived home in North Dakota in August 2010.
