Beyond the Gate From a historical military perspective, when you think about gates or borders the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas or the Berlin Wall’s Brandenburg gate come to mind. Safeguarding the health of GTMO’s critters Upon entering the operating room, immediate feelings of sterility and coolness in the cramped surroundings engulf your senses. It smells clean, if not a touch stifling. The big overhead lights project a spotlight on the patient and the anesthesia monitor/EKG machine methodically mirrors the patient’s heart beat with loud beeps. Country music plays in the background. The necessary surgical accoutrements lying on a silver platter in sterile cloth. “Nermal,” a pet cat, is having a mast cell tumor removed from his neck and back. 02.9.12 Story by Petty Officer 2nd Class Kilho Park

Bataan Death March Radio Spot A Element audio
Lead in: the upcoming 22nd annual Bataan memorial death march will honor world war two service members. P-f-c Amanda Russell witnessed the endurance of Guantanamo bay soldiers battling for a place at white sands missile range in march.
Script: sweat burned eyes, cramping muscles, and blistered feet are things most wouldn’t volunteer for. But for the 525th m-p battalion, this past weekend and the next are just the ‘tryouts’ for the actual competition. Pfc Brandon Cummings placed third in Sunday’s 15 mile march.
Soundbite: “windmill hill, and the last four miles of the ruck, I just wanted to quit. Didn’t think i could do it… I’d rather be in a nightmare with Freddy Krueger honestly. It was pretty bad”
Script: after two weekends of tryouts, the top six scores will compete in New Mexico in march.
