Spc. Cathryn Baldanza didn’t know what to expect when she arrived on site to participate in the 53rd Annual Torrance Armed Forces Day Celebration, from May 18-20. “I thought perhaps it would be just a matter of us Soldiers manning our vehicles so the public could have a look,” said Baldanza, of the 56th Military Police Company, 11th Military Police Brigade. “As it’s turned out, it’s been an amazing experience.”

Camouflage netting augmented the trees of Whittier Narrows Park accompanied by the sights and sounds of soldiers busily moving about in anticipation of the day’s oncoming battle. Yet, this was to be a conflict fought not with machine guns and grenades, but spatulas and serving spoons as the 137th Quartermaster Company, 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, participated in the 2012 Philip A. Connelly Awards Competition in El Monte, Calif., May 6.

Driving onHeavy Mettle, Army musicians show toughness at Best Warrior
Soldiers of the 300th Army Band usually carry musical instruments as opposed to instruments of war when taking on a mission. Their typical weapons of trade are not assault rifles, machine guns or grenade launchers, but trumpets, tubas and trombones, among many others. Rather than sending rounds downrange, they create symphonic melodies that fill the air with festive music, a tradition that dates back as far as the Army itself, when Continental Army musicians accompanied the colors into battle during the Revolutionary War. Yet, here they were, instruments secured safely back at home base, bearing full combat loads while carrying conventional weapons as these Soldier-Musicians competed in the 63rd Regional Support Command Finals of the 2012 Best Warrior Competition at Fort Hunter Liggett, Calif. April 23-26.

Spc. Jonathan Chacon traversed the terrain of the land navigation course, climbing hills, crossing rivers, negotiating spurs and draws with skill and athleticism. His path was winding once he had plotted his points. However, he found all of them in the time allotted. Tired, but undeterred, he returned to the start point psyched for the next event.
