News Stories Hot and cold: From combat to taxes Spc. Lucas Sutton has always believed that in life things happen for a reason.
So when a severe knee injury interrupted his ability to perform any longer as an infantryman and shattered his longtime dreams of becoming an Army ranger, he let his faith run its course.
“It’s sad, but I’m a very positive person, and I like to think on the upside of life,” he said. “I’m a big believer in ‘everything happens for a reason.’”
Now, little more than a year after a serious case of runner’s knee brought his aspirations to a screeching halt, the Virginia Beach, Va., native has found himself in a rather peculiar situation for combat Soldiers – still serving in the Army, but now preparing taxes instead of training in the field. 01.27.12 Story by Sgt. Christopher Gaylord

Day of firsts for operators of new radar system The radar truck moved into position on top of an observation point overlooking sparse ground that has been pock-marked with impacts from artillery shells. A team of soldiers poured out of the vehicle to set up their equipment. Jumping into action, the soldiers began swinging hammers, emplacing grounding stakes into the packed gravel around the radar. They leveled the radar, grounded the generator and had the system fully functional in less than five minutes. The radar and crew are ready to track incoming mortar and artillery rounds so that a counterbattery can return fire. 01.26.12 Story by Sgt. Austan Owen

Austan Owen
Family in no short supply as staff sergeant becomes an officer Having spent the last decade in the Army, Erica McLean is more than familiar with the act of rendering a salute.
Having others salute her, however, might take some getting used to.
After 10 years of climbing her way through the Army’s enlisted ranks, McLean finally stepped into the shoes of an officer Jan. 13 – for the first time, and for good – trading her staff sergeant stripes for the gold bar of a second lieutenant during a direct commissioning ceremony at Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s North Chapel. 01.13.12 Story by Sgt. Christopher Gaylord
