The 20th Engineer Battalion, Task Force LUMBERJACK, is on its way home after a yearlong tour in Afghanistan. Their mission over the past 12 months was route clearance - hunting down and neutralizing the improvised explosive devices that plague the war-torn nation by killing its security forces and civilians alike, as well as coalition forces.

The 618th Engineer Support Company (Airborne)—nicknamed the Nasty—is on its way home to Fort Bragg after a yearlong tour in some of the roughest areas of Afghanistan.


Fort Hood Soldiers Awarded The Purple Heart
Two Fort Hood Soldiers were awarded the Army’s oldest medal this week for their actions in Afghanistan. Sgt. Shane Savage and Pfc. Adam Davis, of the 584th Mobility Augmentation Company, 20th Engineer Battalion, were on a major route in southern Afghanistan when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device Friday.


Engineer Company Joins the Fight
Soldiers of Bravo Company, 40th Engineer Battalion, 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, commemorated a deployment milestone this week with the time honored combat patch ceremony. Combat patches are traditionally awarded after units serve 30 days in a combat zone. The ceremony itself dates back to George Washington and the Revolutionary War. Bravo Company, attached to Task Force LUMBERJACK in Afghanistan, is the first company in the 170th IBCT, to don the patch on their right shoulder.

The 20th Engineer Battalion, Task Force Lumberjacks, was paid a special visit by the US Army’s highest ranking engineer officer yesterday on Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan. Lt. Gen. Robert L. Van Antwerp, Chief of Engineers and US Army Corps of Engineers commander, took time to visit the various engineer units, including the Lumberjacks. He received a brief on operations, talked to primary staff officers, and recognized soldiers for their outstanding service during his visit.
