The Indiana National Guard’s newest addition, a disaster response force package, was put under the microscope Aug. 26, 2011, at Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center in central Indiana to test and validate their ability.

Enter table 1, a 14-by-16-foot pitch-black room illuminated by strobe light, automatic machine-gun fire mixed with explosions rumble through the surround-sound speaker system, and a thick, smoky fog imitating just that; the fog of war. The $1.5 million, 7,500-square-foot training center is the newest in the world, opening its doors to combat medics in March 2011. It is the second to be built for the National Guard after Camp Shelby, Miss.
