    Story by Sgt. Brandon Bednarek

4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division

FORT BLISS, Texas - As the successor to July’s “Operation: Iron Sapper” mission, engineers assigned to C Company, 4th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, convoyed nearly 70 miles into a New Mexico mountain range last week to conduct a three-day training exercise dubbed “Operation: Mountain Sapper".

Capitalizing on the foundation established during OIS, Mountain Sapper took engineers to the next level by creating force-on-force, live-fire platoon exercises that incorporated Ultimate Training Munitions’ non-lethal paint rounds.

The location of training and mission variance also offered the engineers a realistic approach to employ the basic and advanced skills required during combat operations in mountainous regions like Afghanistan.

Donning “full battle-rattle” and specialized facemasks to prevent injury, Soldiers traversed several miles over rough terrain to complete dismounted route-clearance missions, offensive attack strategies, and defensive security objectives during both day and night missions.

Battalion Command Sgt. Maj. Brian T. Raines, an experienced engineer who also wears the distinctive Sapper Tab, was present during the operation’s largest platoon-versus-platoon battle to witness training first-hand and share his wealth of knowledge to soldiers, noncommissioned officers, and platoon leaders.

Systematic after action reviews were also conducted during and immediately following exercises by seasoned first sergeants to increase quality of training and provide soldiers with critical information needed to build upon their foundational capabilities.
