TORII STATION, Okinawa, Japan – The Staff Judge Advocate Office on Torii Station remains dedicated to providing superior customer service not as the exception but as the standard mode of operation. When it comes to taking care of its customers the wait time to is minimal. The office has a strong law preventive program and a solid tax assistance program. To top it off the office boasts a customer satisfaction rate at 98 percent.

Those attributes gained notoriety as one of the Army’s best in not one but two administrative areas. The office received the Department of the Army’s Judge Advocate General’s Excellence in Claims Award and the Chief of Staff Award for Excellence in Legal Assistance for fiscal year 2011.

“This office cares about customer service and each soldier, civilian and master labor contract employee exercises a work ethic that demands attention to detail” said Lt. Col. John Moore, staff judge advocate, 10th Regional Support Group.

Moore added the key to providing the best customer service is to provide timely and professional service and clients with legal problems should see an attorney as soon as possible.

The legal assistance award exemplifies how well the office performs its daily operations and maintains its customer base to include the use of information technology to aide customers. Family law, estate planning, consumer affairs and referral procedures were a few points of interest looked at to determine if the office would donned the title as the Army’s best.

One determining factor that helped distinguish Torii Station’s legal office was tax services. Last year Torii’s tax center prepared more than 2,000 income tax returns and saved taxpayers more than $380,000 in tax preparation fees. Overall the center helped its customers receive more than $4,500,000 in tax refunds.

The Claims Award is based on processing time for claims, claims procedures, unit standard operating procedures and relations with the host country in terms of prompt and thorough investigation of Status of Forces Agreement or SOFA claims. Another important factor is how efficiently the office handled disaster preparedness claims.

“This year we took in about 40 Typhoon Jelawat claims. We continue to take in claims from other typhoons as well as far back as 2011. So far the total amount paid is nearly $60,000 and about a fifth of these payments went to Japanese citizens.” said Moore.

This year marked the 13th consecutive year Torii’s Judge Advocate office won the Claims Award for Excellence. The office has won the Legal Assistance award for four years.
