TINIAN, Northern Mariana Islands - Marines, sailors and members of the local Tinian community participated in the inaugural Hafa Adai 5k Fun Run here during Exercise Forager Fury 2012.

The Marines took a quick break from training to interact with the local community while they are here for the exercise.

“The Hafa Adai 5k was a blast, we got all of the locals and Marines together for a motivating run,” said 2nd Lt. Alex W. Cloninger, the fun run coordinator and logistics officer with Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine expeditionary force. “The Tinian Police Department scouted a route for us to use with the beginning of the race heading through town and the last mile or so along the coastline.”

The winner of the fun run was Lance Cpl. Benjamin Romulus, an aviation supply Marine with MWSS-171, MAG-12, 1st MAW, III MEF.

“The 5k was a pretty good run,” said Romulus. “I had a lot of fun and I am hurting a little bit but I enjoyed it. My time was 19 minutes and 51 seconds and running with the locals was pretty fun especially when you see all the kids from the high school joining in. It was a great experience and I would definitely do it again.”

The fun run received a large turnout thanks to flyers posted around the town the week leading up to the even.

“There were 114 participants that registered to run,” said Cloninger. “We also had several that ended up just joining in and a lot more that came to watch.”

After the race, many participants jumped into the ocean moments after crossing the finish line; the perfect way to cool down after a hard morning run.
