STAFFORD, Va. – The Quantico Middle/High School Lady Warriors Basketball Team traveled to Stafford to compete against the Grace Preparatory School Warriors in both teams’ first game of the season on Friday.

The Lady Warriors left a big impression as no mercy was given to Grace Prep in the first half. Grace Prep was struggling to get a single basket, while the Lady Warriors had no issues stealing, rebounding and making baskets the entire game. By the end, the Lady Warriors claimed victory over Grace Prep, 36-7.

As the Lady Warriors arrived to the game, Paul Roy, head coach for the team, already had his mind set on how his team was going to start the game off.

“I expect them to be nervous,” said Paul Roy, head coach for the Lady Warriors before the start of the game. “I’m going to try to offset their first-game jitters by keeping the tempo and the defensive pressure on Grace Prep for the entire game. Hopefully, this will get us some easy turnovers and baskets. In the end, I just want my younger players to build their confidence as they go through the game.”

The Lady Warriors started the game by implementing their coach’s plan perfectly. They were grabbing the majority of the rebounds, going on multiple back-to-back fast breaks and stealing the ball consistently. The Lady Warriors quickly went on a 12-0 run.

Midway through the first half, Grace Prep seemed to build momentum with their ability to block a few of the Lady Warriors’ shots. Their momentum was short lived though, as Cheyanne and Marquis, two junior players for the Lady Warriors, put Grace Prep back in their place with a pair of fast breaks.

Grace Prep tried to keep the pace of the game quick, but that pace seemed to be their downfall as well. There were plenty of hasty shots and missed opportunities by Grace Prep. Their ball handling abilities weren’t up to the caliber of the Lady Warriors, as nearly three-quarters of their possessions resulted in lost ball control or outright theft by the Lady Warriors.

At halftime, the Lady Warriors claimed a comfortable lead, 28-0.

In the second half, Roy being up by 28 changed his game plan. He decided to let the team work on their fundamentals, and take their aggression and intensity down a few notches.

During this time, Grace Prep was finally able to bypass the Lady Warriors’ defense just enough to put points on the board.

Meanwhile, the Lady Warriors began using their passing game and, in doing so, exploiting Grace Prep’s inability to maintain pressure in a man-to-man defense.

By the end of the game, the Lady Warriors easily bested their opponents, 36-7.

“They played like it was their first game,” Roy said after the game. “They are not in the best shape skillfully quite yet, but they are getting there. On a good note, everyone did get a chance to play tonight and all the players, including the parents who attended, are going home happy.”

On the other side of the court, Grace Prep players and coaches were not too upset about the lost, as many of them were just glad to gain the experience.

“We always enjoy playing Quantico,” said Lance Deffenbaugh, head coach for Grace Prep. “Some of our girls haven’t actually played basketball before this season, so this is a good learning experience for them. We look forward to playing them again in a couple of weeks.”
