TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. – Marines and sailors from throughout southern California will take part in the 1st Marine Division exercise, Steel Knight 2013, from Nov. 29 – Dec. 13 at the Combat Center.

Steel Knight is an annual combined arms live-fire exercise focused on training and preparing units from 1st Marine Division for deployment as the Ground Combat Element of a Marine Air-Ground Task Force.

Live-fire exercises like Steel Knight ensure Marines have the opportunity to rehearse and refine essential Marine Corps combat skill sets, readying them to meet current and future real-world operational demands. The live-fire scenarios, enhanced by the Combat Center’s world-class training ranges and instructors, provide tough, realistic training for the largest Marine ground combat unit on the West Coast across the range of Marine Corps combat operations.

Local residents may notice an increase in training noise from artillery operations, increased aviation traffic over helicopter routes and tactical vehicle movement. This exercise is the first large exercise in several months, following a training reset period as the Combat Center transitions from the Enhanced Mojave Viper pre-deployment training to the next generation of Marine combat training early next year.

Participating units include: Marines and sailors from 5th Marine Regiment, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Tank Battalion, 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 3rd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 1, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, Marine Air Support Squadron 3 and Tactical Training Exercise Control Group.

The exercise will start with a series of platoon-sized ranges, and will build in complexity from company-sized operations up to a final exercise involving the entire division. The exercise will conclude on Dec. 13.
