MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – Nearly 1,200 guests attended a Toured and Catered Event hosted by Marine Corps Community Services in a hangar on the flight line aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., Nov. 5.

A TCE is a program unique to MCAS Miramar. The program has been going on since 1991 where the air station and flight line opens its doors to the public who want to learn about Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and Marine aviation.

“Our Toured and Catered Event’s program really is a community outreach,” said Gary Karr, corporate catering sales manager with the Officer’s Club aboard MCAS Miramar. “We’re inviting civilian guest to come on base, so we can educate them on the roll that Marine Corps Air Station Miramar plays.”

All the profit from the food and beverage revenue goes right back into the quality of life and recreational programs on the air station, explained Karr.

“We’ve got an array of things for people to see,” said Karr. “First and foremost, they get to come on board and do their whole event on the flight line, which is all restricted space on the base and they're able to come and meet Marines, live breathing Marines, that will host their events and be with them the entire evening.”

During the TCE, Sgt. Maj. Anthony Spadaro, sergeant major of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, took the time to recognize two Marines for winning the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and 1st Marine Expeditionary Force noncommissioned officer and Marine of the quarter boards.

However, they received more than just recognition.

“We’re going to go one better than that tonight,” said Spadaro. “The two Marines are going to be brought up to the stage and Brig. Gen. Bugsby, commanding general of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, is going to, on the spot, meritoriously promote them.”

Sgt. Anthony Clement with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 352 and Cpl. Kyle Christensen with Marine Light Attack Training Helicopter Squadron 303 were meritoriously promoted to their current ranks.

The two Marines were unsuspecting of the promotion and overwhelmed.

“I was really surprised,” said Christensen. “I thought I was just supposed to come here and talk to the general. It was definitely surprising and eye-opening.”
