TORII STATION, Okinawa, Japan - The 505th Quartermaster Battalion rocked the 247th Military Police Company, 21-11, to take home the United States Army Garrison Japan, Torii Station, intramural softball title Oct. 16 at Torii Station’s softball field.

The 247th came out strong in the first inning as six batters reached the bases to score three runs in the top of the first but it did not take long for the 505th to answer.

Outfielder Naoyuki Nozaki, with the bases loaded, sent a blazing fly ball deep into left field for a home run capping off a seven-run inning for the 505th as they took a 7-to-3 lead into the second inning.

As rain started to fall opening the second, the 247th came alive scoring three runs, and by the third inning outfielder Spc. Brandon Smith, 247th MP Co., blasted a two-run homer helping the 247th to an 11–10 lead going into the fourth.

Clay Sump, head coach, 505th Quartermaster, said he was a bit shaken after the 247th came out fighting.

“I know we have some big bats, but I was worried because we did not hit the ball well for a minute, I wondered if the bats would come alive again,” he said.

The 505th started to show signs of promise of the big hits that carried the the team during the regular season as outfielder Capt. Kevin Barnett, 505th Quartermaster, homered to right field scoring two runs to give the 505th a 12-11 lead.

After almost two hitless innings, the 505th once again answered the call for a game changer in the sixth as Barnett homered again. It turned out to be just what the 505th needed to cap off a nine-run inning winning the game by mercy rule 21-11.

Barnett said he was focused going to the plate with the bases loaded.

“I knew that if I could get a good pitch, it would be a chance for me to get a good hit and it was time,” he said.

Barnett, the most valuable player, finished the game with two hits and six runs batted in.

After the game, the 505th chanted and screamed loudly their unit motto, “proud to pump,” and was in good spirits after winning the title.

“We’ve finished runner up the last three years so it feels good to win it all,” said Sump
