JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii — The NAACP recognized three Marines stationed at Marine Corp Base Hawaii for their service to community at the Hickam Officers’ Club, Saturday.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People held their annual luncheon for their 2012 Military Leadership Awards, where four types of awards were given to 11 recipients from the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps.

“I think it is important that we continue to establish and validate our legacy, and we have some folks here who have helped us overcome (challenges),” said Alphonso Braggs, president of the Honolulu Hawaii Branch of the NAACP. “Today’s award recipients all embody a word – commitment, servitude and leadership.”

From MCBH, Sgt. Maj. Ansil Lewis, Headquarters Battalion sergeant major, received the Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Inspirational Leadership Award, and Sgt. Maj. Frederick A. Smith, Combat Logistics Battalion 3 sergeant major, received the Ida B. Wells-Barnett Meritorious Service Award.

“We have an obligation to ensure that (NAACP) goals in folks are recognized,” Braggs said. “We work to achieve equality and justice across all spectrums.”

The other MCBH Marine to receive an award here was Sgt. Myron L. Ellis, a Sacramento, Calif., native and Marine with Alpha Battery, 1st Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, for excellence in community service. He received the Medgar Evers Community Service Award.

“I’ve worked over the past three years with (Marine Corps Community Services) Readiness and Deployment, and have put more than 230 hours of community service,” Ellis said. “I think that community service is something you are meant to do, not something that you should be made to do. It’s something you should want to do.”

Ellis said he was honored to be recognized by the NAACP because they are an institution that is for “the advancement of everyone” and “they do a variety of events to help the community.”

Throughout the luncheon, the attendees spent their time thanking those who had contributed in the past, those who were being presently recognized for their contributions, and looking forward to those who would contribute in the future.
“Get out there, there’s a lot to do,” Ellis said.
