MEDITERRANEAN SEA – The guided-missile destroyer USS McFaul (DDG 74) departed Koper, Slovenia, following a port visit, Sept. 6.
During the visit, McFaul sailors had the chance to visit with locals and experience the history culture of Koper.
“Koper was an excellent port visit for McFaul sailors,” said Cmdr. Dan Gillen, commanding officer of McFaul. Gillen said the city’s beautiful architecture, rich culture and warm people contributed to a successful visit.
McFaul also hosted tours for local civilian and military personnel, and conducted a community service project at the Osnova Primary School. During the community service project, more than 250 students met with the sailors and talked to them about topics ranging from shipboard life to their favorite music artists.
“The children were very enthusiastic about our visit and asked plenty of questions about the U.S. Navy,” said Aerographer’s Mate 1st Class Alvin Tatum, project organizer.
McFaul, homeported out of Norfolk, Va., is on a scheduled deployment conducting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.
