ARGHANDAB DISTRICT, Afghanistan - The Afghan Local Police force here expanded and increased its fighting capability, when nine new graduates completed their one-month police training Sept. 1 at the District Police Center in Arghandab District.

In order to complete the training managed by the International Security Assistance Forces, graduates had to demonstrate they had developed the skills needed to help stabilize and defend Afghanistan against the Taliban.

“Today, the ALP not only gained nine men, but nine families,” said Col. Mohammad Ibrahim Karimi, the Afghan Police security officer at Arghandab. “The families of these men will also serve as a support system for the village.”

The ALP members work side-by-side with the Afghan Uniform Police to familiarize the AUP with villagers and create a more trusting relationship with local residents.

Karimi said that with the increased security, Taliban could no longer take advantage of the villagers.

The graduates said they were pleased with the training they received and were eager to deter Taliban threats. Their training included basic policing procedures, weapons handling, and a collection of skills necessary to maintain stability in the region.

“The new ALP officers will increase the overall security of our region and help push out the Taliban,” said Haji Shah Mohammad, the district governor.

There are a total of 281 ALP members currently in the Arghandab district. The members are widely dispersed, so any additions to the force helps the ALP maintain better district security.

Many areas in the Arghandab District have minimal security, potentially giving the Taliban a chance to impact villagers. Mohammad said the increased security will protect and improve conditions among the villagers.

“The graduates are all from different villages where the security was poor,” said Karimi. “Villagers are pleased with the growing number of AUP because increasing security helps stabilize the country.”

Karimi said an increased ALP presence would provide a more stable environment and could potentially lead to improved recruiting for the future generation of ALP personnel.

“The Taliban fear the growing number of ALP members,” said Karimi. “The ALP members know everyone in the village they are protecting and who is an outsider.”

Karimi said slowly but surely, the combined Afghan National Security Forces will bring peace and security to Afghanistan. He said the Taliban threat is decreasing and peace is prevailing.

“Our main priority is security and peace for the entire country,” said Karimi. “Without peace there is nothing, and without the police, there is no security to create peace.”
