    Operation Onward Liberty

MONROVIA, Liberia – Members of the U.S. Navy and the non-governmental organization Project Hope spent eight days in Liberia providing training and medical support to Armed Forces of Liberia soldiers and local citizens here Aug. 3-10 in support of Africa Partnership Station 2012.

The first APS mission took place in 2007, and since then has taught a variety of skills to thousands of military personnel.

According to the APS website, www.naveur-navaf.navy.mil, “This project is about enabling African nations’ militaries to stand on their own. Working together through this shared vision, we are all contributing to safety and prosperity throughout Africa.”

The crew arrived on the U.S. Navy’s High Speed Vessel Swift, which is part of Military Sealift Command, based out of Washington, D.C.

Three days of the visit to Liberia was dedicated to a community outreach health fair in which more than 2,000 local citizens were seen. During the health fair, patients were provided eyeglasses, medication and referrals for more intensive care.

In a speech at the opening day of the health fair, Tolbert Nyenswah, assistant minister of public health for Liberia, expressed his appreciation for the care being provided.

“The military are good people,” said Nyenswah. “We appreciate the initiative to provide healthcare to the citizens of Liberia.”

Another portion of the HSV 2 visit took place at Camp Ware, where 29 AFL soldiers were trained on a variety of topics from non-lethal combat skills to tactical decision-making and infantry patrolling.

Instructors who came to visit with and train the AFL were impressed with the soldiers.

“The AFL have been excellent students,” said U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Chad Fordyce, Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force team leader. “The soldiers here have great attitudes and are really engaged in the class. They are the best we have seen so far.”

After a successful visit, the HSV 2 departed Liberia Aug. 11 to continue their mission with APS.
