MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - The Marine Corps Air Station New River Commissary gifted four local students with scholarships, as part of Scholarships for Military Families, Aug. 10.

The scholarships were courtesy of the Scholarships for Military Children program, the program's focus is to provide educational assistance to the children of our military members.

The local recipients of the four scholarships given this year were Jalayana K. Miller, Sarah E. Medlin, Desirae Seals and Hayley E. Barber.

The recipients of the scholarships were chosen based on a number of requirements including grade point average, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and an essay written about an assigned topic.

“I wrote my essay on great people throughout history that no one really knew that made a big impact on the world like Albert Einstein and Rosa Parks,” said Desirae Seals, one of the scholarship recipients.

Scholarships for Military Children has awarded more than $10 million in scholarships to military children around the world.

This year alone the foundation has awarded 670 students with more than $1 million in scholarships.

“The scholarships that were presented to the students totaled $1,500 each, supported by Kellogg’s and Fisher House Foundation,” said Frank Heffron, the commissary store assistant director.

“I am attending UNC Chapel Hill and will be majoring in nursing. I would love to be a traveling nurse for a few years after completing school, then I would like to come back and attend graduate school to become a nurse practitioner,” said Seals.

The Defense Commissary Agency is a worldwide chain of stores that offer groceries to military personnel and their families in a safer environment for less.

“The Defense Commissary Agency is proud to be involved with a program that helps support the educational needs of our military children,” said Joseph H. Jeu the Defense Commissary Agency director and CEO.

“I would like to thank everyone who participates in funding this scholarship program who helped many deserving young people achieve their goal of getting a college education,” Jeu said.
