    U.S. Army Reserve Command

FORT McCOY, Wis. – Forty-three Army Reserve warrior-citizens from around the world have come here to compete against one another at the 2012 U.S. Army Reserve Command Best Warrior Competition. Spc. Chung Lee is one of 22 junior enlisted soldiers vying for the title of Soldier of the Year.

Chung, a carpentry and masonry specialist with the 797th Engineer Company, is representing the 9th Mission Support Command which includes units primarily located at posts across the Pacific Ocean.

To become one of the competitors in the BWC, Chung pushed himself during training in his home town of Tamuning, Guam.

While carpentry and masonry is his primary military occupation, using numbers in that profession also translates to his civilian career.

“I am an accountant in my civilian job,” said Chung. “I'm still using numbers in my military job. Carpenters measure twice, cut once.”

Chung trained with his sponsor, Sgt. Gerald Manansala, who competed in the 2011 USARC BWC. He feels the knowledge he has gained from his sponsor has given him a better idea on what to expect from this year's competition.

“He has motivated me,” said Chung about his sponsor. “He gave me a lot of advice about how to do things.”

With the knowledge of what to anticipate, Chung feels this competition has given him no surprises.

“He has to do this for himself,” said Manansala. “All of the soldiers from our unit are proud of him for getting this far.”

Chung is looking forward to the formal interview event with some of the highest ranking non-commissioned officers in the Army Reserve on the last day of the competition where he hopes to make up a lot of points.

When the competition is over, Chung said he is excited about going home and returning to his family and friends.
