NASHAU, N.H. — When Air Force Maj. R. Jason Bartholow was assigned to the Defense Contract Management Agency it came as a bit of a surprise.
“I didn’t know anything about DCMA before I got my orders,” said the newly promoted Air Force engineering officer, who credits DCMA with providing a diversified range of experiences not found elsewhere.
Bartholow recently left DCMA BAE Systems, a streamlined command under DCMA Boston, for an Air Force assignment at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.
With DCMA, he served as a program engineer, program integrator, engineering team lead and as an agency representative in Afghanistan.
“It’s been interesting to learn the other side of contracting, after spending most of my career as a user of these products,” said Bartholow of his time with DCMA. With an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s in religion, Bartholow is no stranger to understanding how seemingly diverse things work together.
He added that travelling in southern Afghanistan and performing audits at U.S. and coalition forward operating bases in Helmand province was eye opening. “It was a great experience to see “boots-on-the ground” contracting, and how it affects individual people out there.”
“The first half of my time there was at a large camp in southern Afghanistan, where I performed quality assurance work,” said Bartholow. “I was in Kabul for the second half, working with computer programming.”
In addition to DCMA, during Bartholow’s 10 years of service he has worked as a flight test engineer on HH-60s with the H-60 Combined Test Force at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.; as a program engineer, Commander’s Action Group chief and executive officer for C-17s at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio; and as a branch chief and flight commander at the National Air and Space Intelligence Center, also at Wright-Patterson.
Bartholow credits Lisa Marie Clark, DCMA BAE Systems director, with helping make his time with DCMA complement his Air Force career. “I really appreciate that she is willing to give military people leadership opportunities,” he said, “and that she cared about my career progression.”
“Maj. Bartholow is a spectacular young officer,” said Clark. “We’re going to miss him personally and professionally.”
