    II Marine Expeditionary Force

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — The Marine Corps said farewell to a 22-year veteran during an elaborate retirement ceremony here, June 29.

Master Sgt. Keith Granberry, the sergeant major of 2nd Medical Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 25, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, brought his family and friends, coworkers and subordinates together to commemorate and celebrate his career, which included two deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and multiple tours to Japan.

The commander of 2nd Med. Bn., Navy Capt. Cameron Waggoner, spoke to the large crowd about Granberry’s career, character and charisma.

“He truly is a leader of Marines,” Waggoner said. “He is a mentor and a role model, not only with what he brings as a Marine, but what he brings as a man.

“He is a man who understands integrity, who understands loyalty, who understands leadership and responsibility,” he continued.

Waggoner described the personal and professional gains to having a Marine like Granberry in his command. As Waggoner’s senior enlisted advisor, Granberry often had to play the role of advisor to his leaders, as well as mentor to his junior troops.

“I could not have asked for a better person to fill this job and take on the responsibility,” Waggoner continued. “He and I have spent many hours over the last several months discussing a variety of things and I truly appreciate the guidance he gives me.”

When it came time for Granberry to speak to the crowd taking up two tents, and the Marines standing more than 50 across, he kept it humble, short and light, but no less meaningful. He began by highlighting the importance of family, saying how he had proudly followed in the footsteps of his father and brother, who had both served as Marines.

“Having my family push me all the time, that’s the only way I made it,” Granberry stated.

He concluded with some advice to the younger Marines.

“Find a mentor and listen to them,” Granberry said as he turned to face them. “Don’t ever think you can do this on your own. The only way any of us make it is because we have help, and that’s why we are so strong.”
