VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Marine sergeant and West Lafayette, Ind., native was selected by the Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group senior leadership as the unit’s non-commissioned officer of the quarter, June 27.

Sgt. Michael Moyer, who is a Salesianum High School graduate, has served as an infantry skills and foreign weapons instructor at the unit since December 2010.

According to Master Gunnery Sgt. Michael Earwood, operations chief at the unit and the senior member of the NCO of the quarter selection board, Moyer, was recognized for his outstanding performance of duty and a collective standard of proficiency that exceeded all of his peers.

Prior to reporting to MCSCG, Moyer served as a squad leader with First Battalion, Second Marine Division in Camp Lejeune, N.C. from November 2007 until November 2010. During this period, Moyer deployed twice (once to Iraq and once to Afghanistan) in support of the Global War on Terror.

On his deployment to Afghanistan, Moyer successfully led his squad through numerous enemy skirmishes, which led to Moyer being awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with a combat “V” device for Valor as well as a combat meritorious promotion to the rank of corporal.

His parents Phillip and Loreta Moyer now reside in Wilmington, Del.

Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group coordinates, manages, executes, and evaluates U.S. Marine Corps Security Cooperation programs and activities, to include assessment, planning, military related education and training, and advisor support to ensure unity of effort in building Partner Nation Security Forces capacity and capability in order to facilitate USMC and regional Marine Forces component support to combatant commanders security cooperation objectives.
