Sgt. Maj. Randall Carter relinquished his post as I Marine Expeditionary Force and U.S. Marine Corps Forces Central Command sergeant major during a post and relief ceremony at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., June 22.
Carter was awarded a Legion of Merit for his honorable service and retired during the ceremony. He transferred his post to Sgt. Maj. Ronald Green.
“Sgt. Maj. Carter has boundless energy,” said Lt. Gen. Thomas D. Waldhauser, the commanding general of I MEF and MARCENT. ”His contributions at the MEF here did not take a back seat to the grinding traveling schedule this job takes on board. I couldn’t have been more happy to have worked with him for these past years.”
The Brooklyn-raised sergeant major, who was joined by his wife, Linda, during the ceremony, completed an honorable 33 years in the Marine Corps. He served in many operations over the course of his career, including Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and Vigilant Resolve.
“Marines, you’re the tip of the spear,” Carter said. “I’ll leave today as a proud and humble sergeant major, knowing that I served with some great warriors. Continue the legacy of the blue diamond. Godspeed and Semper Fidelis.”
Green began his career in 1983 at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. He transferred from Marine Corps Forces Europe and Marine Corps Forces Africa as the Force Sergeant Major to take on his new billet. Green was selected to the rank of sergeant major in 2004. He moved quickly up the ranks in his early career, having been meritoriously promoted four times.
Green is excited and eager to put his best foot forward with I MEF and MARCENT and serve the Marines and their families over the next few years.
“I am truly honored,” Green said. “It’s truly a privilege. I’m humbled to take this position. I look forward to serving with you here and wherever that flag goes in the Marine Corps.”
Green’s personal awards include: the Legion of Merit gold star in lieu of second award, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with four gold stars in lieu of fifth award, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award. He has also been awarded the Good Conduct Medal with one silver and three bronze stars in lieu of his ninth award and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
