CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marine Corps communities are close-knit, though the stitching may loosen as a spouse deploys.

The command for 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group made sure their families are staying close to the unit during an end of the school year bowling tournament at the Bonneyman Bowling Center here June 15.

During the festivities, families of deployed Marines had a chance to meet new people and maintain relationships with fellow spouses they’ve already met.

“When the spouses attend our events I want everyone to meet someone new,” said Michelle Godfrey, the battalion’s family readiness officer. “We want them to share experiences and stay connected with the unit while enjoying themselves in a fun environment.”

During the event approximately 50 spouses and children participated in an evening of bowling and competition. The occasion was also a way to welcome the start of a new summer and the end of an old school year.

“We decided to do it in this time frame, because school let out,” Godfrey said. “What better time to do an event such as this?”
Not only was the event a time for joy, but also a time for awareness with the hurricane season in full swing.

“Aside from the bowling and food, we’re handing out [severe weather packages],” Godfrey said. “We want our families to know how to be prepared for hurricanes or whatever severe weather may present itself.”

Inside the package was a destructive weather guide, family readiness handbook, distress pen, military one source flier and information about the battalion’s upcoming events, such as a day on the beach in July and movie night in August.

The battalion has kept their unit’s families as a priority, even throughout their current deployment to Afghanistan in support of International Security Assistance Force operations. Whether it be bringing out the families for fun events, or keeping them informed on weather conditions, 8th ESB is keeping morale up, and families up-to-speed.
