KANDAHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan National Army commandos and coalition special operations forces found an improvised explosive device factory in Kandahar province, May 16.
The ANA commandos from the 3rd Kandak, partnered with coalition SOF, conducted the operation in the Panjwai district of Kandahar near the village of Zapozai, in order to disrupt suspected insurgent supply lines in the area.
The IED factory was discovered as the ANA commandos and coalition SOF searched through a series of compounds around the village.
Once inside the factory, the team found nine pressure plates, four carbon rod contacts, raw ammonium nitrate and a fragmentation grenade rigged with trip wire. In addition to the cache, they also found and destroyed two assembled pressure plate IEDs.
“The citizens of western Panjwai have expressed an increase in dissatisfaction with the number of IEDs maiming or killing innocent locals,” said Lt. Col. Richard Navarro, the Special Operations Task Force-South commander. “This operation is intended to support the local community to live their day to day lives without fear of IEDs.
Increased security will allow the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to support development projects aimed at helping the people of western Panjwai better provide for their families. This operation demonstrates our commitment to standing alongside ANASF for the foreseeable future.”
