FORT CARSON, Colo. – Fort Carson recognized 123 volunteers for their exceptional service and dedication during the 2012 Fort Carson Volunteer Awards ceremony at the Elkhorn Conference Center on post, May 15.
During the ceremony, Fort Carson Army Community Service recognized the more than 4,000 individuals who comprise the Army Community Service Volunteer Program, contributing more than 147,000 hours of personal time this year to the post.
“This ceremony is to honor and award our installation volunteers,” said Patricia A. Randle, director, Fort Carson ACS. “I think it’s right for us to recognize people who so selflessly give their time and talent to provide support for soldiers and families on this installation.”
More than 300 soldiers, family members and friends of Fort Carson gathered at the Elkhorn Conference Center to show their support for the award recipients.
“This is a tremendous effort on behalf of the Fort Carson community to inform the public on how important volunteers are,” said retired Command Sgt. Maj. Norris Cole, a volunteer fitness trainer who has devoted more than 1,000 hours.
Fort Carson ACS recognized volunteers with a variety of awards, such as the Exemplary Volunteer Service award, Youth Volunteer of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, The Emma Marie Baird award, and the Columbine Award of Excellence.
“It is very important that we take this time to recognize all the volunteers who have so generously given their time to make the quality of life better for our soldiers and their families,” said Beth Anderson, wife of Maj. Gen. Joseph Anderson, commanding general, 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson.
The dollar amount the Army would have to pay Fort Carson volunteers for their time would total $2.5 million a year, She said.
Patricia Randle and Beth Anderson presented the final award from the Army Volunteer Corps to the Fort Carson community in the form of a novelty check with a deposit balance of $2.5 million.
“When you are able to help someone who really needs the help, it makes all the difference in the world,” said Brigitte Cornell, volunteer mayor, Navajo Village. “That is your paycheck.”
