Women's initiative training team meets with Baraki Barak women Lance Cpl. Kris Daberkoe

Sgt. Mary Petty, Georgia Agribusiness Developement Team II's women's initiative training team member, took a moment after conducting horticulture training with Baraki Barak women in Logar province, Afghanistan, to spend time with a young attendee at the training. During the training, Afghan women learned new techniques to apply to gardening that will help them better provide for their families.

BARAKI BARAK, Afghanistan - GA ADT I met with more than 30 women at the MAKA AG center in Pul-e’ Alam to provide Horticulture training. The women present were very excited and quite confident in their ability to garden. “We are farmers!” was a statement made by the majority of the women present. The women also received instruction on composting, which improves garden soil, thus increasing produce yield. Everyone present was receptive to new ideas and techniques in horticulture. During the meeting, several women expressed a desire to begin an association and held a separate meeting to elect their officials. The Women’s Initiative Training Team NCOIC from GA ADT I introduced the women of Baraki Barak to the WITT NCOIC for GA ADT II. At the end of the meeting, the women gathered for refreshments and photos.

The final GA ADT I training and transfer of responsibilities to GA ADT II was very successful. The women who attended this training were receptive to the continued efforts of ADTs to improve agribusiness in Afghanistan. The instruction provided by the trainer was very impressive and highly professional. The level of engagement and participation from the Baraki Barak women was phenomenal. With the dedication of the key female leaders and the support of the women present, they will be provided the opportunity to sustain their family’s health by growing fresh fruits and vegetables as well as provide their families with the opportunity to pursue marketing opportunities to improve family income.
