FORT BLISS, Texas - A Quartermaster Symposium was held by the 123rd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, March 28 at Stayton Theater on Fort Bliss.

The events for the day were a resiliency skit, a logistics senior leader panel, and the key note speaker, Command Sgt. Maj. James K. Sims, the Quartermaster Regimental Command sergeant major.

The resiliency skit featured “Iron Support” soldiers and gave lessons into what it means to be resilient using a dramatization.

“We wanted show how you could cope with things that happen and stay resilient,” said Sgt. 1st Class Thomasine Isler, the 123rd BSB logistics non-commissioned officer, who also assisted in the coordination of the symposium.

After the resiliency skit, the senior leader’s panel began. They talked about professional development, the Non-commissioned Officer Education System, and about skill sets needed to advance their career.

“Writing is essential for our growth and for the growth of others, because in the military we judge performance based off of OER’s and NCOER’s,” said Sgt. Maj. Melinda Yarbrough, the Army Air and Missile Defense Commands’ logistics sergeant major and a member of the logistics senior leader panel.

Before the panel left, they stayed to answer questions from the soldiers in attendance.

The last event of the day was the key note speaker. Sims discussed the future of the Quartermaster Corp and how Army downsizing will affect the soldiers within.

The Army is implementing quality control measures, because we have to downsize we are going to keep the best and the brightest, said Sims.

Also speaking with him was Sgt. Maj. Michael Waller, the quartermaster component sergeant major.

Together they talked about the several different processes the Army is going to use to find the under performers.

“The target is not the individual, it’s the performance,” said Sims.
“What I personally took from it, was is that the Army is cracking down, and now is the time to be on the top of your game and be a top performer,” said Isler.
