KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Soon the Army Reserves will celebrate its 104th birthday, and the American Forces Network will be showcasing a small handful of units throughout the month of April to represent the Reserves.

On March 23, third platoon from the 721st Engineer Company of Grand Prairie, Paris and Tyler, Texas, was greeted by an AFN reporter at one of its road construction sites in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. Equipped with a video camera and portable microphone, Sgt. Crystal Madriz captured footage of the 721st soldiers dumping gravel and building a road for coalition forces and Afghan locals to use. Madriz interviewed soldiers, asking them what the mission was and how they felt it was going.

After leaving the construction site, the AFN reporter traveled to nearby Combat Outpost Luke to interview third platoon’s engineer officer, 1st Lt. BC Hardin, native of San Angelo, Texas. Hardin, who is in charge of project management, went into further details about the road construction and base expansion projects the team of engineers is completing.

“It’s good to get recognized on such a large stage,” Hardin said after his interview. “But I’m just one cog in the wheel. It’s my lower enlisted [soldiers] who deserve the credit.”

The American Forces Network will run the story periodically throughout the month of April to highlight the Army Reserves as part of a month-long birthday celebration. With a broadcast presence nearly everywhere soldiers are present, the 721st will be seen in regions such as Europe, the United States, and the Middle East.

“Of all the Reserve units in Afghanistan, to be chosen as a featured unit is an honor,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Edward Fowler, 980th Engineer Bn. command sergeant major. “I’m proud the 980th [and 721st] will represent the Army Reserves for its 104th birthday.”
